Abstract

Subculture was a concept that was first used in the study of deviant behavior and attributing it as a product of social problems and it was defined as misbehavior, not much longer it was redefined as a reaction to globalization and social and cultural integration, and of course, gave the voice to the silent minority. In this study, the role of subculture in the emergence of new artistic styles was investigated, and to achieve this goal, the period of the seventies in the United States was examined. The reason for choosing this time-space range was the sudden eruption of subcultures due to the socio-political situation there. Next, in order to answer the question of how subcultures can create a new art style, first, the fundamental concepts used in the research, such as art style and subculture, were analyzed, and then, by studying the theoretical data, it was studied in a qualitative way. Contemporary documentary photography was discussed and finally Nan Goldin's works were analyzed as a research case. In the end, it was concluded that the people belong to the subculture, due to the lack of acceptance and social approval, were unable to even find appropriate and common language and words to communicate with others, or at least showed reluctance to this effort. For this reason, these people turned to their own style, and its expression was seen in the unique style of Nan Goldin's works. First, this style appears in the field of individual style and according to the concept of psychological reality, it goes back to the interior of the artist; After reaching the sub-cultural capital and finally being absorbed in the culture, it becomes a general style and results in contemporary documentary photography.
